Ethnological Museum-Haile Selassie's quarters |
- Africa is not only the continent with the most countries, 54 recognized and independent states, it is also the most ethnically diverse continent.
- Africa is the cradle of humanity. We can argue about which country is the place of origin of all humankind but we will still find ourselves on the continent of Africa.
- It is the only continent where even if you take an escorted trip or tour you can still feel off the beaten path.
- The countries and learning experiences you get in each one can be so different, since they are so diverse.
- Most people haven't been, so you get to create your own ideas and formulate your own sentiments about your experience without it being tinged and influenced by other peoples' experiences.
- No matter where you go in Africa it is exciting, raw, and beautiful. It is a continent where you can really get away from everything you know, truly testing your mettle.
- The continent of Africa is a place where everything hasn't been done. A place where you can really have a "novel" idea, a place to invest before it is too late.
- Africa is a place to celebrate life in ways we rarely do in the West, enjoy the challenges when you are there and appreciate the creature comforts when you come home.
- The media tells us Africa is all wars, conflicts, famine and misery but how will we know if we never go?
- Truly there is something for everyone on the continent. Whether you are a foodie looking to challenge your palate; adventurer looking to get off the beaten path; a wine connoisseur; intrepid mountaineer; someone wishing to go back in time to a simpler life; a music lover; someone from the African diaspora looking to connect with your heritage.

On the roof of Africa in the Simien Mountains |
To travel is a conscious decision we make. Is traveling the world overrated, we don't think so? If you have been anywhere in Africa, what did you think? If you agree with any of my opinions in this blog post please share and hopefully inspire someone to leave their place of comfort and take up learning through traveling.
I could learn and admire so much by visiting the most modern and developed cities and countries in the world. On the other hand, by visiting remote villages in Morocco, Namibia and especially in Ethiopia, with their ancient traditions, I really did develop a deep feeling of respect for their way of life. Such people seem to be still untouched by western civilization. These people are following their own rules, rituals and ceremonies. I came to think that these tribes with their simple, so called “not yet civilized” way of living will never destroy our planet, they will not leave any of all these negative footprints which our western civilization is able to produce.
ReplyDeleteWe absolutely agree with you. There is so much we could learn from those living lives very different to our own. Every year in Africa there are fewer tribes people living traditionally than the year before. We aim to make meaningful connections in Ethiopia and other African countries to learn about and support these traditional living ethnic groups in maintaining their culture and practices.
