Is Ethiopia safe to visit?

Typically Ethiopia is one of the safest countries in Africa to visit at any time. Given the current situation in Ethiopia we can say the vast majority of the country is still safe, but some areas should be avoided. Obviously the Tigray region, which hosts a number of popular tourist destinations such as Axum, and Gheralta, is a complete no-go zone for the moment. In addition, since most travel to the Danakil Depression originates in Mekelle, the region capital of the Tigray region, Dallol is also not recommended at this time.  Given the proximity of the Amhara region with Tigray, we also will not be operating any Ethiopia tours that include Bahir Dar, Gondar, the Simien Mountains or Lalibela in the current climate.

Although much of Northern Ethiopia is off limits, this is the best time to explore the Ethiopia less people get to experience. Travel Africa Tours loves to get our guests off the beaten path. We can confidently recommend visitors to Ethiopia explore Dire Dawa, Awash National Park and the Harar region.
